Using the NEXUS Lane

Owners of a NEXUS card are permitted to use the NEXUS lane whenever thay pass between the US and Canada. Both the direction and the type of transportation are irrelevant. NEXUS cards are for traveling by land, air or sea . This means the border crossing and clearance are significantly speed up no matter the way you pass the border. Border crossing locations have one lane (most commonly known as the NEXUS lane) designated solely for NEXUS use. The busy locations might additionally allocate a second lane if deemed necessary. Keep in mind though that it’s not enough for the driver of a car to hold a NEXUS card in order to be permitted to pass through the NEXUS lane. Instead, all passengers (including children and infants) should have a valid NEXUS card

Using the NEXUS lane by land

When reaching the US-Canada border by a vehicle, owners of a NEXUS card are expected to pull into the NEXUS lane. After that, they need to present their cards to the card reader. Once they have been scanned, the car must stop at the customs booth. This is done in order for the customs officer to visually verify that it’s indeed the card owner crossing the border. After that, you will be allowed to pass the border. Keep in mind that every now and then customs officers do random vehicle checks. It is important to remember that NEXUS card holders are not allowed to use the lane if they are traveling with people, who don’t hold a NEXUS card. If you do that, you risk losing your NEXUS card. So, make sure everyone in the vehicle is a NEXUS passengers.

Using the NEXUS lane by air

Travelers, including children, who have intentions of using their NEXUS card for air travel must have passed through an iris scan at one of the NEXUS enrollment centers. Everyone is obliged to fill out a Customs declaration form and then continue to the NEXUS or Global Entry kiosk. After that, they must stand before the camera in order to get an iris scan identification. It is required for travelers to provide details about their current trip via the available touch screen. Once they’ve received a kiosk self service receipt, they should continue to baggage claim and show the Customs declaration form and the self service ticket at the exit.

Using your NEXUS card when traveling by sea

When passing the border on a ship, the captain is the one responsible for handling customs and immigration procedures. This includes assisting the NEXUS card holders aboard the boat. The captain needs to call the NEXUS reporting center up at least 30 minutes prior to the boat’s arrival and provide the trip details along with the personal details of ever single NEXUS members onboard of the ship. The officer at the center then issues a report number and provides it to the customs officers at the designated arrival site.
